Funding for population health research projects utilising WA cohort studies 08 March 2024 Four successful recipients of the Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund’s Western Australia (WA) Cohort Studies-Research Support Program (WACS-RSP) have shared nearly $3 million to undertake research projects using data from two of Western Australia’s leading cohort studies. WA is the home to cohort platforms that provide unique insights into early life events and interventions, the transition from adolescence to adulthood and non-communicable diseases. Cohort studies provide a strong evidence base of population health data collected at different points in time and over time. The WACS-RSP provides funding for up to three years for population health research projects that utilise data and/or bio-specimens from WA’s largest cohort studies. WA researchers awarded funding to fuel future NHMRC success 08 March 2024 A total of $4.73 million in funding has been awarded to 25 early and mid-career researchers under the Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund WA Near Miss Awards: Emerging Leaders 2023 (WANMA EL) program. The WANMA EL program is designed to support Western Australian researchers who have narrowly missed out on a highly competitive National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Investigators grant. WANMA EL funding is provided through one-year Emerging Leaders (EL) Grants and 2 to 3-year EL Fellowships. The WANMA EL Grants are to be used by recipients to enhance areas of the NHMRC application which were identified by the NHMRC peer review process as being improvable, while the EL Fellowships allow the recipients to do the work proposed in their NHMRC application over 2 or 3 years. Partnerships to boost impact of cancer research and healthcare innovation grant programs 08 March 2024 The Co-Funding Partnerships Program (Co-FPP) was established to secure new funding for research and innovation in WA. The Co-FPP enables partnerships to be established to develop new funding programs or maximise the impact of existing funding programs that are aligned with the Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund Priority Goals and that are funded by both partners. The FHRI Fund has awarded $4.32 million to establish two co-funding partnerships, with funding to be matched by the partner organisations. The FHRI Fund will partner with the Cancer Council WA to co-fund the Cancer Research Project Grant Scheme, which supports Western Australian researchers focusing on early-stage research ideas. Location change for FHRI Fund March Open Day 06 February 2024 Due to unforeseen circumstances the next WA Government’s Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund Open Day on Friday 8 March 2024 will now be held in Nedlands at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. The event willbe hosted by the Office of Medical Research and Innovation in collaboration with the WA Centre for Rural Health and the Pilbara Aboriginal Health Alliance. The FHRI Fund Open Days providean opportunity for attendees to hear about exciting WA health and medical research and innovation developments, FHRI Fund programs that are open for applications, as well as recently awarded FHRI Fund grant recipients. Funding for Clinicians to undertake important research 04 December 2023 Four successful recipients of Clinician Research Fellowships (CRF) have been granted a total of $1.36 million. The CRF Program provides support to WA Health employees so they can pursue high-quality research projects that will lead to better outcomes in Western Australia’s public health system, while continuing to perform some of their clinical duties. The CRF Program is a joint initiative of the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund and the Raine Medical Research Foundation. Health experts involved in clinical duties, including allied health and health sciences, dental, medical, nursing and midwifery professions, are eligible to apply for the Program.
