Current funding opportunities

The FHRI Fund releases funding programs in four cycles, opening in March, July, October and December each year. Subscribe for updates to be notified about upcoming funding cycles and other FHRI Fund announcements. Each funding cycle commences with an Open Day. Information is available about past open days.

The Strategic Priority Program - Capacity Building program is co-funded by the FHRI Fund and the Cancer Council WA.

This program aims to support cancer researchers and address critical needs through eight funding streams.

  The Cancer Research Project Grants program is co-funded by the FHRI Fund and the Cancer Council WA.

This program aims to support early-stage research projects to become more competitive for larger national funding pools, with funding available across four streams: Aboriginal health, rural and remote health, clinical and Public Health.

 The 2025 EMCR Fellowships: Preventative Health for Priority Populations program is co-funded by the FHRI Fund and The Hospital Research Foundation Group.

The Fellowships are intended to support early-to-mid-career researchers seeking to improve health outcomes relating to key priority populations through co-design, trialling, and evaluation of innovative preventive health interventions.

 The WA Cystic Fibrosis Research Collaborative Program is co-funded by the FHRI Fund and Cystic Fibrosis WA in collaboration with Conquer Cystic Fibrosis.

This program aims to promote innovative research and sustainable careers in cystic fibrosis research in WA.

Distinguished Fellows

The FHRI Fund Distinguished Fellows 2024-25 program aims to attract outstanding research leaders to Western Australia, to build capacity and lead high quality, globally recognised research in WA.

 The Major Research and Innovation Application Support (MRIAS) program aims to enhance WA’s standing as a leader in health and medical research and innovation.

In-principle cash commitments are provided on a competitive basis to Western Australian researchers and innovators applying to nationally or internationally competitive external grant funding programs (External Program).

The NCRIS Partner Program 2024-25 aims to leverage Australian Government and partner funding for the collaborative acquisition of national research infrastructure to maintain and grow WA’s cutting-edge health and medical research and innovation capabilities.

The Western Australian Near-miss Awards: Emerging Leaders (WANMA EL) program targets researchers who narrowly missed out on securing a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Investigator Grant Opportunity, which is considered a critical career milestone for researchers.
