Current funding opportunities

The FHRI Fund releases funding programs in three four-monthly cycles, opening in March, July and November each year. Subscribe for updates to be notified about upcoming funding cycles and other FHRI Fund announcements. Each funding cycle commences with an Open Day. Information about past Open Days is provided here.

The DISCOV3R Focus Grants Program provides grants to investigate Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) as a sustainable long-term testing solution for COVID-19. For details and updates on the program visit the DISCOV3R Focus Grants page.

The Innovation Challenge 2023: Generative Artificial Intelligence Applications is seeking creative solutions that use Generative Artificial Intelligence technology to address significant health and medical challenges. For details on this program visit the Generative AI Challenge page.

The Major Research Application Support (MRAS) Program provides cash commitments for applications that seek to leverage new major funding into WA. Through this, it is expected that the MRAS Program will enable opportunities for the translation of research findings into new knowledge, improved health and wellbeing, address areas of need, and enhance WA’s standing as a leader in health and medical research. The Capability Building Program: National Reconstruction Fund (NRF) – Medical Manufacturing (NRF MM) is seeking to proactively build the capability of WA researchers and innovators to promote success in applying for NRF MM funding. The WANMA: Ideas Grants 2022-23 Program provides Grants for eligible near-miss applications to the 2022 National Health and Medical Research Council Ideas Grants program. for details and updates on this program visit the WANMA Ideas Grants 2022-23 page.

The Clinician Research Fellowships 2023 is a Program of the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund and the Raine Medical Research Foundation, designed to encourage clinicians employed by WA Health Service Providers to develop their research capability while continuing some clinical duties. The program also facilitates high-quality research that will ultimately provide better health care outcomes. The Government of Western Australia has issued The Challenge for a world-leading medical research and innovation solution to resolve a pressing problem of health service delivery in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

The best solution will take home the $5 million prize supported by our partners, Rio Tinto, BHP and the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund.

The FHRI Fund Distinguished Fellows Program aims to attract outstanding research leaders to WA to build the capacity of high quality, globally recognised research in WA. For details and updates on this program visit the FHRI Fund Distinguished Fellows Program page.

The purpose of the Co-Funding Partnerships Program (Co-FPP) is to establish collaborations and funding partnerships to bring genuinely new non-government funding for health and medical research and innovation to WA, and to build a culture that supports co-operation and interconnectedness.
