FHRI Fund Distinguished Fellows Program
The 2023 FHRI Fund Distinguished Fellows Program (the Program) aimed to attract outstanding and innovative world-class research leaders (the Fellows) to WA, who will lead a substantial and high-quality innovative research program.
Fellowships were offered to three international or interstate senior research leaders, appointable at academic Level D or E professor, or equivalent clinical level (for clinicians in health care disciplines including allied health and health sciences, dental, medical, nursing and midwifery professions), to relocate to WA and undertake a significant program of research.
Fellows were provided with an attractive 5-year funding package consisting of salary support as well as other research personnel salaries, direct research funding and relocation costs.
Each funding package was to the value of up to $5 million over 5 years with up to $2.5 million funded through the FHRI Fund. An additional $500,000 Reserve Funding can be requested, noting that justification is required. A cash co-contribution equal to the amount requested from the FHRI Fund was made by the Administering Institution and could include cash contributions made by any partner organisation(s).

The Guidelines and Conditions state that the funding package may be used for ‘relocation costs of maximum $30,000 in the first year and can include relocation costs for other research personnel appointed using the funding package’. Is the cap of $30,000 across all personnel, or $30,000 per person?
The cap of $30,000 is across all personnel including the Fellow.
The Guidelines and Conditions state that the funding package may be used for overhead costs (maximum 54% of direct research costs). We would consider ‘direct research costs’ to include staffing costs for the % of time spent on the research. Can appropriate salaries be included when calculating the 54%?
Yes, salaries directly related to the research can be included when calculating the 54%.
The Guidelines and Conditions state that each funding package is to the value of up to $5 million over 5 years with up to $2.5 million funded through the FHRI Fund. Is it possible to request less than $2.5 million from the FHRI Fund if the full amount is not required based on the potential Fellow’s discipline?
The funding package can be less than the maximum amount stated in the G&Cs if appropriate to support the relevant Fellow. Noting that the Fellows will be competitively assessed by the panel and the quality of the Fellow and an appropriate funding package to support them in achieving the aims and objectives of the Fellowship, are key assessment criteria.
