Second FHRI Fund Open Day at Curtin University
The second Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund Open Day was held on Friday 2 March 2023 at the enAble Institute, Curtin University, with over 100 people attending. The event was coordinated by the Department of Health’s Office of Medical Research and Innovation (OMRI) in collaboration with the enAble Institute. Aligning with one of the FHRI Fund Focus Areas, the March Open Day had a theme of Mental Health.
The event featured several presentations including from the Honourable Stephen Dawson MLC, Minister for Medical Research; Mr Simon Millman MLA, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health; Mental Health; Mr John Van Der Wielen, Chair, FHRI Fund Advisory Council; Professor Bronwyn Myers, Director, Curtin enAble Institute; Professor Chris Moran, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Curtin University; Professor Ian Everall, Executive Director WA Health Translation Network; Professor S.S. Vasan, Director of OMRI, WA Department of Health; Dr Ingrid Laing, Consumer and Community Involvement Program WAHTN/WA Department of Health, as well as OMRI staff.
The FHRI Fund Open Days mark the start of each of the three funding cycles, scheduled in March, July and November.
Seven programs were launched at the Open Day and the recently released Distinguished Fellows Program was also highlighted:
- Clinician Research Fellowships Program: which is co-funded with the Raine Medical Research Foundation (Raine Foundation) and aims to support early-and mid-career clinician researchers in Western Australia (WA)
- Co-Funding Partnerships Program: which supports collaborations and funding partnerships to provide new non-government funding or maximise the impact of existing charitable funding for health and medical research and innovation
- DISCOV3R Focus Grants: which offers grants to investigate the use of Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) as a sustainable long-term testing solution for COVID-19, as well as the effective use and responsible disposal of RATs
- FHRI Fund Distinguished Fellows Program: which aims to attract outstanding and innovative world-class research leaders (the Fellows) to WA
- Major Research Application Support: which provides in-principle financial support for research applications to nationally and internationally competitive grant funding rounds
- WA Near-miss Awards - Ideas Grants 2022-23: which target emerging WA researchers who narrowly missed out on recent National Health and Medical Research Council grants
- Innovation Challenge 2023 - Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI): which supports creative solutions that use Generative AI technology to address significant health and medical challenges in health and medical research and innovation, education and training and health care service delivery
- Capability Building Program - National Reconstruction Fund (Medical Manufacturing): which is designed to build capacity of WA researchers and innovators to promote success in applying for NRF MM funding for a nominated project.
