Grant success
19/06/2026

Western Australia has a diverse and highly capable health and medical research sector. As national funding schemes become increasingly competitive, there is an opportunity to further strengthen how the system supports WA researchers to develop high‑quality, competitive grant applications.

The Office of Medical Research and Innovation is developing a WA Grant Success Framework to support a coordinated, evidence-informed, statewide approach to grant competitiveness.

Two complementary consultation streams are informing development of the Framework:
  • A sector‑wide online survey open to individual WA health and medical researchers, seeking input on barriers, enablers and opportunities to strengthen grant success.
  • Targeted consultation with WA research organisations and system leaders, coordinated by OMRI, to understand existing grant support approaches, pressure points and opportunities for alignment.
Development of the framework will be informed by:
  • best‑practice grant support approaches used by highly successful research organisations
  • engagement with WA universities, Medical Research Institutes and Health Service Providers
  • sector‑wide input from individual researchers
The framework will identify priority actions that strengthen support for researchers at key career stages and enhance alignment across government, universities, Medical Research Institutes and Health Service Providers.

The WA Grant Success Framework will complement existing investments through theFuture Health Research and Innovation Fund and build on the strong foundations already in place across the WA research ecosystem.

Help shape this Framework by completing this short online survey: WA Grant Success Framework-Researcher's perspectives – Fill in form
