May Open Day recognises the importance of clinical trials

The next Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund Open Day will feature clinical trials and the opportunity they present to enhance the lives of Western Australians ahead of international Clinical Trials Day in May.
An essential component of high-performing health systems, clinical trials drive continuous improvement of health care, ensuring patients receive the best evidence-based care available.
Clinical trials activity ensures community access to cutting-edge treatments and interventions, improves the quality of care delivered within our health system, and generates substantial economic benefits for the state by attracting investment.
The FHRI Fund Open Day will also celebrate Western Australia's Busselton Health Study – a long-standing cohort study of the Busselton Population Medical Research Institute (BPMRI). Since 1966, the study has been collecting and examining demographic, lifestyle, behaviour information and biospecimens, such as blood samples, of their Busselton cohort to better understand and manage disease and illness.
Busselton Health Study research activities are diverse and include a range of health conditions and measures, including respiratory disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, healthy ageing, and genetic epidemiology.
Co-hosted by the WA Department of Health’s Office of Medical Research and Innovation (OMRI) and BPMRI, which supervises the Busselton Health Study, the FHRI Fund Open Day theme will be ‘Clinical trials — translating medical advances into benefits.’
Speakers include
- Hon Stephen Dawson MLC, Minister for Medical Research
- Kane Blackman, FHRI Fund Advisory Council member
- Busselton Health Study and clinical triallists.
The event will feature the launch of WA’s inaugural Clinical Trials Roadmap to grow WA’s clinical trial opportunities and increase access to clinical trials. Recently awarded FHRI Fund grant recipients will also be recognised.
