    International autism expert arrives in Perth for FHRI Fund Distinguished Fellowship 31 March 2026 Western Australia’s commitment to advancing autism research has received a major boost with the appointment of Associate Professor Mirko Uljarevic as the 2024–25 FHRI Fund Distinguished Fellow. A $3.4 million FHRI Fund Fellowship, co-funded with more than $1 million from the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation, will support a 5-year research program led by Associate Professor Uljarevic, who relocated from Stanford University to Perth. The program, Transforming the clinical pathway for children with autism: Using big data to improve outcomes, aims to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of autism screening, diagnosis, and care in WA.   • WA cystic fibrosis fellowships to advance phage therapy 05 August 2025 Two fellowships together worth $900,000 have been provided to experienced WA researchers to pursue research in cystic fibrosis. Associate Professor Anthony Kicic will explore the use of ‘phage’ therapy to target infection in vulnerable populations so they can be developed into safe and effective medicines and Dr Yuliya Karpievitch will look at how artificial intelligence can be used to reduce the time taken to match phages to the right bacteria to treat infection.   • Researcher in focus - FHRI Fund researcher Dr Aleksandra Miljevic explores novel treatment for youth mental health 02 July 2025 Depression is the most common mental illness worldwide and one of the largest contributors to disease, it’s a growing and important public health dilemma. Dr Aleksandra Miljevic, a postdoctoral researcher at the Perron Institute received funding from the Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund in late 2024, to identify and implement a personalised mental health model of care for youth under 25 years of age. The FHRI Fund Translation Fellowships – Burden of Disease and Genomics program granted Dr Miljevic a 3-year fellowship to build an evidence base for non-pharmacological depression treatments, advancing the use of non-invasive brain stimulation with genetic screening as a treatment for youth with depression and suicide ideation.   • WA innovator has national success to develop new drug 02 July 2025 WA innovator, A/Professor Juliana Hamzah has been awarded $750,000 to develop a ground-breaking WA drug as a first-in-class agent for effective and safe removal of plaque in blood vessels, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
