Cancer research grant opportunities available for WA

Applications are now open for the co-funded Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund and Cancer Council WA’s 2025 grant programs. The Cancer Research Project Grants
The Cancer Research Project Grants support early-stage research projects establishing potential for further funding opportunities and translation of research findings.
Of the 12 available grants, at least one will be offered in each of 4 priority areas—Aboriginal health, rural and remote, clinical, and public health.
The Cancer Research Project Grants offer $140,000 for up to one year for each project, with flexibility for some priority areas.
Strategic Priority Program – Capacity Building
The Strategic Priority Program – Capacity Building aims to build WA’s research capacity by supporting postgraduate students and early-, mid- and senior-stage career researchers. The program offers 8 funding streams including:
Early, Mid and Senior Career Fellowships
The Fellowships aim to promote partnerships and collaboration, advance the quality and impact of cancer research in WA, as well as contribute to the career advancement and research productivity of cancer researchers in WA.
The following 2025 fellowships will be offered:
- Early-career Fellowship, up to $225,000 in total for up to 3 years
- Mid-career Fellowship, up to $544,000 in total over up to 4 years
- Senior-career Fellowship, up to $769,000 in total over up to 4 years.
Clinical Capacity Building Grant
The Clinical Capacity Building Grant aims to help build research capacity for clinicians in WA and promote local and national cross-institutional partnerships. The grant will provide $114,000 per grant for a 1-to-2-year project.
Honours/Masters Scholarships for Aboriginal Students
These scholarships aim to support early-stage Aboriginal researchers at Honours or Masters level to gain research experience within a major project. The scholarships will provide up to $60,000 per recipient for one year.
PhD Top-Up Scholarships
The scholarships valued at up to $48,000 over a period of up to 4 years will provide support for outstanding students with the potential to pursue full-time PhD studies in cancer-related research.
Early and Mid-Career Investigator Grants
The Suzanne Cavanagh Early-career Investigator Grant supports talented early-career cancer researchers to develop the skills and necessary track record to advance their career and will provide $40,000 for one year.
The Mid-career Investigator Grant supports talented mid-career cancer researchers to consolidate their track record and advance their career and will provide up to $61,000 for up to one year.
