Investment in innovation projects to improve mental health in children and young people 28 November 2023 Nearly $5,000,000 has been awarded to innovation projects across Australia through Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Innovation Challenge: Child and Youth Mental Health program. The aim of the Challenge is to stimulate the development of an innovative solution to a significant unmet need in the area of child and youth mental health in WA. Precision Health Research and Innovation on display at October Open Day 08 November 2023 Western Australia's Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund October Open Day was held at Edith Cowan University with a theme of 'Precision Health'. The event was coordinated by the Department of Health’s Office of Medical Research and Innovation (OMRI) in collaboration with Edith Cowan University and hosted at their Joondalup Campus. The Minister for Medical Research, the Honourable Stephen Dawson MLC, opened the event, emphasising the importance of precision health which aligns to the FHRI Fund Strategic Objectives and is a key focus area of the WA Health and Medical Research Strategy 2023-2033. Fellowships to support emerging WA child health researchers 30 October 2023 Almost $1 million has been awarded to four recipients of the inaugural round of the WA Early Career Child Health Researcher Fellowships (ECCHRF) program. The ECCHRF Program is a joint initiative of the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund and the Brightspark Foundation. The Program is designed to assist WA early-career researchers in child health to become better qualified, experienced, and positioned for seeking longer term child health research funding through avenues like the NHMRC’s Investigator Grants (Emerging Leadership) scheme. FHRI Fund bolsters WA funding success in national NCRIS program 30 October 2023 A $1 million contribution has been awarded to Ozgene PTY Ltd and the Animal Resources Centre through the Major Research Application Support (MRAS) Program. The Animal Resources Centre has been a critical resource for the biomedical research community in Australia and internationally for over 40 years and this funding support ensures the continuation of this valuable platform for health and medical research. The MRAS program funded by the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund, provides cash commitments for applications to relevant major competitive research funding programs (External Programs) that explicitly require co-funding. Support for WA Cohort Studies as valuable resource for Western Australia and beyond 30 October 2023 Seven cohort studies will receive funding through the inaugural WA Cohort Studies-Operational Support Program (WACS-OSP). The WACS-OSP aims to provide operational funding necessary for cohort studies to continue to contribute to the delivery of clinical outcomes, changes to health policy and translational health outcomes. The program funded by the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund, is providing grants based on an assessment of research excellence which will be based on eligible research grant income, number of PhD students supported, and the number of new projects supported by the cohort study over the previous three years.
